Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the ability to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
