Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
