Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
