The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
