Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
