European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
